The Oscars is known for its opulence. You have the crème de la crème of Hollywood attending each year, one big sexy famous get together. Oscar nominees get goodie bags worth $200,000 which consists of plastic surgery, a luxury trip to Japan with private security, and strangely enough an electric bicycle. There are no half measures at this event and the food at the after party is no exception! For the past 22 years, world renowned chef Wolfgang Puck has done the catering for the Oscars official after party. So what exactly do you feed the Hollywood elite when money is not an issue?
Wolfgang and his 900 strong team have to feed over 1500 of Hollywood VIPs each year, that’s a lot of covers for one night. Of course there will be some celebrities ordering off the menu too, with the likes of Barbra Streisand and Bradley Cooper being in love with the truffle chicken potpie, and potatoes with caviar. Luckily for Wolfgang, the Oscars has moved from a sit-down dinner to a tapas form, making it a little easier and allowing him to also get dishes out quicker.
Celebrity favourites include a wood-fired Oscar shaped flatbread pizza with house smoked salmon and caviar. 10 kilograms of American farm raised caviar is used for the night, which is no doubt music to Bradley Cooper’s ears, but means the chefs have to find even more creative ways to use it all! Mushroom lovers are also catered for, but we don’t want to imagine what the cost of 7 kilograms of winter black truffle is!
It must be some sort of Groundhog Day hell for the chefs that have to prepare 1,000 grilled cheese sandwiches, 6000 mini brioche buns, 10 gallons of banana ice cream, and 1000 mini cookies. Although there can be only so many Oscar winners each year, Wolfgang makes sure there are no losers by using around 1 tonne of 70% Fleur de Cao chocolate to make 7,000 mini chocolate Oscars which are then covered in edible gold dust!
No after party is complete without a drink or two. There are around 2,400 bottles of Piper Heidsieck champagne, 2700 bottles of Sterling Vineyard wine and 130 bottles of Haig Club single grain Scotch whiskey to go around! Kudos to Wolfgang Puck and his team, they’ve come up with the perfect after party!
